What inspired you to create a dim sum book?

Food is a universal language that we can all speak. And so our first project, ABC Dim Sum, promotes learning through eating. Many ABC books may start with “A is for Apple”, but we wanted to create something specific to showcase some of the items at our dim sum meals. Our nieces and nephews would always ask for the same dish (soy sauce noodles) rather than sample the many delicious bites on plates or hidden under stacks of piled high steamers. With this book, we want to introduce them to a few favorites amongst the vast variety of Chinese food and show them that no dim sum meal or experience is the same. This book is a fun way to invoke curiosity, encourage them to explore more foods and learn about a new food for each letter. Now, our nieces and nephews recognize a lot more foods, including chicken feet (but have not yet agreed to taste it).

Who is the intended audience for this book?

An introduction to dim sum for kids and adults, this book exposes you to a new culture of food using brief descriptions and colorful illustrations. Bring it along with you and learn as you eat. We hope this book will be a conversation starter and connect new speakers with native speakers, young children with older generations or just friends who want to learn more about dim sum. We do not expect everyone to have a perfect accent - we aren’t native speakers either.
